First Generation Scholars & Programs

First-Gen Scholars is a multi-year, cohort program for first-generation students seeking a community at the University of Utah. The program defines first-generation as students whose parent(s) or guardian(s) do not possess a bachelor’s degree or four-year equivalent degree from a college or university within the U.S. Through this close-knit community, students support each other in achieving academic success while staying connected throughout their educational careers. Students receive holistic mentoring from advisors focused on increasing their capacity to problem solving and navigate complex life events leading to increased success and retention. Students engage in a programing designed to increase personal/professional skill development, building supportive relationships, and managing stress and academic pressure.

Incoming first-year students are paired with established First-Gen U student mentors to help them get on the inside track and quickly learn the tricks of navigating the University system. First-year "mentees" attend a class designed to help introduce and connect them with the multitude of resources and opportunities available on campus. First-Gen Scholars mentees become members of a small community and have the opportunity to build close relationships, develop leadership skills, make a difference in the community, and have fun along the way.

We are organized by these 4 pillars:

  1. Building sense of comunity and belonging
  2. Peer support and normalizing the 1st gen experince
  3. Intensive holistic support from staff and advisors
  4. The opportunity to engage in a funded intership that enriches their educational career

Once students complete the program for the full academic year (two consecutive semesters) they will earn 2- free credit elective classes. Plus, many opportunities for scholarships support.

How To Apply?

First-Gen Scholars is a small community with limited spaces available. Students are selected based on their fit within the community and interest in being involved. Students interested in getting involved in First-Gen Scholars should fill out an application only. We have 2 cohorts: Students choose which one works better for them according with their schedules. First one meets every THURSDAY from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Second one meets every FRIDAY from 10:50am to 12:50pm. We make our last cohort decisions around end of July. After students are accepted into the program they will receive a registration code to register for the class (a free credit elective class).
